Windows XP Downgrade Drivers on Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E model

This is a help for anybody who wants to downgrade from Vista to Windows XP on Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E model. I am doing this because the pain through which I had to go through should not happen to others. At the same time I am surprised as why Sony wouldn’t provide XP downgrade drivers if somebody doesn’t like Vista. Also this model comes with 1GB RAM and Vista eats up 3/4 of the physical memeory given.

a) SATA DRIVERS:

These drivers are essential as Windows XP came before the invention of SATA disk drives. Now when you want to install XP on a computer equipped with SATA drive the SETUP process wouldn’t able to detect it and hence it will terminate. Get your sata drivers for this model from here and slipstream those into your xp installation cd using nLite (a very good tool).

SlipStreaming is the process where we burn the additional drivers or XP Service packs in your old XP installation CD. To achieve this use nLite and specify the location of the drivers on your disk. nLite would automatically pick these drivers and would burn a new installation CD for XP. Next time use this CD and re-start your system and a normal XP installation would commence.

Here are the names of SATA drive files you’ll need to slipstream.

iaachi.cat
iaachi.inf
iastor.cat
iastor.inf
IaStor.sys

Please follow this link for more elaborate coverage of nLite process, step by step.

b) SOUND CARD DRIVERS:

Once you are done with your XP installation, the XP complains about the missing drivers for the hardware of this model with message “New Hardware Found”.

For sound card, download WDM_R180.exe from this site . Before you execute this file make sure you run this XP update file (patch) KB835221.exe. This file can be found on Microsoft updates site. Please google it with the name of the file as keyword and you’ll get the link to it.

c) VIDEO CARD DRIVERS:

Use this link to download file win2k_xp14311.exe

d) BRIGHTNESS CONTROL FIX: :

One of the downside of XP downgrade is that you’ll be having trouble with brightness control and you’ll be staring all the time on a very bright screen, not good for eyes. The workaround this is following:

1: Download the Backlight.zip from here
2: Extract it into a folder say BACKLIGHT on C Drive
3: Get into folder C:\BACKLIGHT\Redist and double click the file install.bat
4: Click Windows START button and select RUN and type cmd there, it will open a command window ( black console )
5: Type In C:\BACKLIGHT\Backlight 1 and Press ENTER
6: A window will pop up, with some wait press the OK Button on it.
You’ll see your laptop screen will get dark, because 1 is the most dark level. Similarly you can type brightness options from 1 to 5, 5 being the brightest. In my case 3 serves good purpose. To save yourself from the hassle of doing it everytime you login your machine, create batch files and put these icons on desktop and just double click each time. I have requested Paul to give me source code for it so that I can generate a windows like control where one should able to change the brightness level graphically. To create a batch file do following:1: Open notepad and type following in it:call c:\backlight\backlight.exe 32: Save this file with some name say, bright3.bat
3: create short cut on desktop and double click it whenever you want to change the screen brightness. You can change the brightness control by typing 1 to 5 any number in batch file. Or you can create multiple batch files with various level of brightness control
NOTE: Step 1 to 4 are required only one time but remaining steps need to be executed each time, if you don’t create batch files as mentioned above.

e) NETWORK DRIVERS:

Ethernet Card Drivers: Use this link and download zip file, unzip it and use device manager to install this for Ethernet card:Here is the list of files you’ll need for your ethernet network card.

yk51×86.cat
yk51×86.inf
yk51×86.sys
yk51×86.txt

Wireless Card Drivers:

Use this link to download the required file.

Here are the files you need to put in one folder and use the device driver install to read drivers from your folders:

net5211.cat
net5211.sys
net5211.inf
Here is another link for the same drivers in one file: (The ads are not good there please ignore those )

  2. Was there anything else you did to get the sound working other than KB835221.exe and the WDM_R180.exe? I tried both of those on my daughter’s Vaio but to no avail. Any help is appreciated.

  3. This is all I needed to use. Why not you explicitly uninstall sound card and when it requires again on re-start do following:

    1: Run KB835221.exe
    2: WDM_R180.exe

Sometime wrong drivers installed also preclude correct ones to function. So try the above steps.

  4. I jus got this laptop, and everyone tells me to downgrade to XP. After doing this, will it be worth it? Any other problems you have encountered? What’s the deal with the brightness?
    Thanks!

  5. Hi Anonymous,

Yes it is worth in a sense that it comes with 1GB RAM which is insufficient for Vista. Secondly I didn’t like Vista for various reasons.

However, the brightness control is an issue. After you downgrade to XP, the Function keys (Fn+F5) and (Fn+F6) meant for brightness control doesn’t respond and I have to stare all the time on fully bright screen.

  6. Thanks for the quick response. I don’t mean to sound like a total n00b, but the sound card doesn’t show up in the device manager. So I’m at a loss as to how to proceed. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    1) Wireless driver – I had to download the wireless driver from another site because the ones linked above did not work. The filesize is 200k smaller than the drivers that did work, although they have the same name.

    2) Soundcard. I had the same problem where I installed the update and the driver above but got no sound. I was only able to get the sound when I deleted an “unknown” PCI device in the system devices section of device manager and then rebooted. It then redetected the UA bus driver and the soundcard installed automatically soon after.

  13. How did you slipstream the XP sata drivers into the installation using nlite? nlite requires a .inf file when adding drivers to the installation. The link you provided only allows me to download an .exe file.

    Comment by dankan — January 2, 2008 @ 1:30 am

  14. 7.2 Use one of the following command examples to extract the
driver files from the different package types:

    c:\iata_cd.exe -a -a -pc:\
    c:\iata_enu.exe -a -a -pc:\
    c:\setup.exe -a -pc:\

    ;)

    Comment by Emi — January 2, 2008 @ 7:30 am

  15. that doesn’t work

i typed it in command prompt and it started trying to install the drivers

    Comment by dankan — January 2, 2008 @ 8:57 pm

  16. Hi dankan,

Double click the downloaded iata76_enu.exe file. And let it run at till its end. When it finishes, in one of the directory under your program files will have all the driver files. Search for the *.inf and if you see name like sata, iata etc ( I am sorry I cannot remember it now, but will try to find the exact name for you later ). These are your drivers. Follow the nLite instructions for slipstreaming these file in you Windows XP.

Note: If you still have Vista on your laptop this installation should not cause any problems with your existing drivers as you already have those and they are the same.
    Let me know the outcome.
    cheers:)

    Comment by bkhan — January 2, 2008 @ 9:25 pm

  17. dankan:

    iata76_enu.exe -A -pC:\sata

It will extract to c:\sata (choose whatever folder you want). It will start to “install” and give you the EULA, but will just extract instead, after you have agreed. It looks like it’s installing but it isn’t.

I cant seem to get the Wireless internet to work within XP. i tried the drivers you supplied as well as from other sites: I tried reinstalling and updating the driver for the “ethernet controller” within the device manager. It is the only one left after installing drivers for the regular ethernet lan port. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  25. Hi there everybody,

I too downgraded to WinXP. Everything worked except for brightness control. So, in the absence of any tools, I decided to go and write some code. You can download my results at:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/83073814/Backlight.zip.html

You don’t need Sony Notebook Control or other Sony drivers. But you do need to install MSVC 2005 redistributable, and also memaccess (I’ve included both packages). After that, run backlight.exe. I only put in 5 brightness settings, due to a bug I wasn’t able to track down. So, type backlight x at the command prompt, where x = 1 (dimmest), 2, 3, 4, or 5 (brightness). You can also add backlight to your startup folder, and alter the setting in backlight.cfg.

I wrote this for my VGN-NR110E, but this might also work on other VGN-NR models with GMA 965 graphics card.

I am, however, using the eval version of memaccess, so there is an annoying nag screen everytime you run the utility. If anybody has a copy of memaccess that they’re not using, they can send me that copy, and I’ll be able to recompile a non-nag version.

Thank you so much for sharing your brightness control. It worked on my machine. Thanks indeed.

Question: Can you please share your code for doing this? I need it to to make a GUI around it and then make that program resident and want to define some hotkeys around it, so that the user can change Brigtnss control in a regular fashion at anytime by pressing hotkeys.

Also, answer to your second problem:

Would it be possible for any of you guys to email me the sata .inf files to rtiwari@gordongrant.com. Secondly, how to slip it into the cd since I tried numerous times and failed. I deleted all the partitions from the hard disk, would that cause a problem?

    Comment by Ravist — January 21, 2008 @ 8:22 pm

  44. Ahmed:

Please re-read the board and you’ll find answers to your questions. However, I summarize those for you here:

1: F2 will get you to your computer setup screen.

2: As discussed earlier, the disk drive in your computer is SATA drive. XP doesn’t have drivers to read it during set up. So that is why you need to do slip streaming ( A process where you insert the missing drivers in an XP installation CD ). The tool to do this is called nLite and rest of the process has been discussed above in detail.

PS. Please always read through the given solutions on the board before repeating your questions. Thanks.

  53. The sound drivers for this laptop will work. Once you have already installed the sound driver that was listted about, you have to open device manager and then click view, under the menu select show hidden devices. you will see a list of new devices. usually the sound will show up as a pci device. right click on it and update the driver. once that is done it will detect a few thing. the sound should work when you it is finished and you restart.

  55. I was so excited to find this information. Especially the brightness control. The problem is that it’s for the GMA965. Is there any way that you could contact Paul Chang to see if he could alter it to be compatible with the slightly older GMA950 GPU (945GM chipset) I would be eternally grateful. My VGN-C240E really wants to run Windows XP, but full brightness is killing my eyes (and battery)

    Thanks,
    Emmanuel

    1. I successfully installed WinXP, but the desktop image is kinda blur and distorted. Could n e one know the reason for this???
    2. When I insert PRO card into PRO slot, my system is not recognizing it. Is there a separate driver that needs to be installed for PRO and SD card slots.

    Thanks in advacne.

  66. Hey thanks a lot for all the big help. I am still using Vista home premium for my VAIO NR-120E because my XP Cd has not yet been mailed to me, I bought on line. Anyway my main problem with the laptop is that it won’t start unless I go first to safe mode and restart. Everytime I have it turned off afterwards that I start the laptop again it won’t boot unless I use safe mode and restart. I think I corrupted my system 32 drivers. I may solve this problem if I buy a Full version windows vista home premium software and reinstall everything but I may need to upgrade my memory 1 GB will not work fine with VGN-NR120E.
Are there any suggestions anyone please?
You have been very helpful thanks.

  70. Hey guys! I love the site and can’t wait to get xp installed on my vaio but I am having problems getting the install to recognize my hard drive. I am well aware of using N-Lite and slipstreaming the needed files:
    iaachi.cat
    iaachi.inf
    iastor.cat
    iastor.inf
    IaStor.sys
I have extracted them using the command prompt method as I couldn’t find them in the directory or using the search method… So I have the files but I have burned 8 cds and I still get the error that the system doesn’t see my HD. What I am having problems with is: in N-Lite I am choosing to integrate drivers and create bootable iso, then when I get to the driver screen and click insert, do I choose “Single Driver” or “Mutiple driver folder” Then either way, do I choose “Regular PNP driver” or “Textmode driver”? If it is textmode driver, then which one of the listed drivers do I choose as there is 12 to choose from? I have read the forum over a dozen times and I do not see the answer, I keep trying different ways and writing them down so that I dont try the same way twice, but after 8 burns, I figured I’d just ask…
Thanks in advance! I cant wait to get Vista OFF!
    Mike

    Comment by Mike — February 6, 2008 @ 7:43 am

  71. FINALLY! I chose Multiple driver folder and pointed to where I stored the driver, then using textmode I highlighted ALL of the mobile sata drivers instead of doing one at a time (not the raid ones) and the disk worked. Only eleven disks and 5 straight hours! Its always been my luck though to choose the wrong ways to go in such cases, plus it doesnt help that on the first three disks I was choosing the desktop sata drivers… I dont know what the hell I was thinking… Im used to my desktop I guess. Well, on to the hardware problems!

  72. Hi all,

Updated version of the backlight utility for VGN-NR110E and other related models. Thanks very much to Tux for his help. Download at:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/89532709/backlight.zip.html

    and do the following:

    1) Run MemAccDrvSetup.exe to install the registered version of memaccess. You can install over the unregistered version from before if you installed the previous backlight utility.
    2) Install the visual c files if necessary: run vcredist_x86.exe
    3) Run backlight.exe. No config file is necessary. Use WIN-F5 to decrease brightness, and WIN-F6 to increase brightness.

    Cheers – Paul AC Chang

  73. Hi all,

New link to updated updated version of backlight utility:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/89539630/backlight111.zip.html

    4) You can type backlight.exe x to initialize brightness level when first loading, where x = 1 is lowest and x = 9 is brightest.

    Cheers,

    Paul

  74. I just got the brightness control to work, however, I had to install the C++ redist pack. I guess thats what we are supposed to do, even though the it doesnt say it.

I understand that people are working on a windows interface. Just as a suggestion, Is there a way to use a KEY MAP program and tell windows to execute this task when the hot keys are hit… Its just a suggestion, im sure other have thought about it.

Also, Has anyone else been able to get their external video to work? Please email me if so… I would like to get it working.

  78. For anyone still having wireless problems with the above driver, I found one that worked and you can download it here: http://www.atheros.cz/download.php?atheros=AR5006EX Scroll down to version 6.0.3.85 and click the download link, it will auto start. Unzip it to a folder of your choice. Then in the device manager, update the driver and choose to install from a specific location, choose “Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install”. Then click “Have Disk” and browse to the folder you unzipped the driver to. Then click ok and you will have a list of MANY drivers to choose from (if not, try it once more, none of them are digitally signed) Choose the first Atheros driver in the list, it is named AR5001X and click to install even though windows warns you that it will not work it works just fine. I tried all suggestions on this page and MANY others and this was the only one that worked for me. Even other AR5001X drivers that I found didn’t work… The filenames are:
    net5416.ini
    net5416.cat
    ar5416.sys
    Hope this helps someone…

  80. Does anyone have problems with the vgn-nr120e wireless adapter disappearing from the device manager after a few hours? The cord is in and I have disabled the low battery function that turns it off when the bat is low. I thought it was a Vista problem, but now it even happens in XP. So ever since I’ve had this laptop, the wireless adapter has straight disappeared from my device manager after a few hours of working or sitting idle… I was hoping that after downgrading, this problem would go away. The ONLY way to get it back is to completely turn off the computer and turn it back on. Restarting it does NOT work, along with scanning in device manager. (the internet obviously stops working when it happens) Anybody else have this problem, or do I maybe have a faulty wireless adapter???? Still no luck with audio either…

  85. Naveen,
Follow the link to download the flash media controller: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7gsy04ww.exe
After the install, (I dont remember if you have to restart computer) For me I had to update the driver for the Mass Storage Device and choose the folder where I installed the flash media controller, choose the Texas Instruments driver that appears and you should be good to go. As soon as you insert an sd card windows will recognize it and automatically install the software. I dont have a PRO card so im not sure about that but should be the same… Ive done this twice, the first time I didnt have to update the driver so you might try putting in the card after the install, it might just work… then update the driver if you have to…

    Hope this helps…

  92. Hi Francis III, You don´t need to buy a Full version of windows vista home premium software for reinstall your system and solve the problem. Turn on the lap top and before the system start (boot), press F10 key many times and you will see the restore menu. Folling the instructions and after a few minutes (sometimes many hours) your device restore to the factory mode.

    Hope this help,

The SATA problem will be solved by using nLite then I will re-install the Xp from new CD then I can use the DriverMax to re-install my drivers.

    Comment by Ramesh — April 28, 2008 @ 9:21 am

  125. Okay, I am sure this would be to simple. I just found on Sony Vaio Website
on Software/Driver Tab the list of drivers and files needed suppossedly to
downgrade to Win XP from Vista.
Let me know if these files are really all you need.
Such as Brightness control, Sound, AVI – S Button controls, Wireless etc.
It would be nice. If not the Geek Squad guy at BestBuy where I just
got this laptop told us that he can downgrade this NR120E to XP from Vista
no problem and we paid for WINXP Pro operating system and are suppossed to
do this ourselves they said they are providing the driver files.
Please let me know if this is going to be a problem. Not very computer
savy and don’t need a laptop with features that don’t work. Especially brightness control.
Thank you so much for all your time.

    Comment by CORRAL — April 28, 2008 @ 10:15 am

  126. Hi Ramesh,

Please checkout the chipset used in your main borad. There is a utility available on intel website. First determine that then with that model search for what kind of drivers your SATA drive needs. But my understanding is that it should be the same drivers. Just download these drivers again and try to slipstream again.

    Best of luck.

  127. Hi, thank you so much Paul for the brightness control program, I had everything pinned down, except the brightness issue, I installed a hotkey program for vaio computers, but it only controlled the audio part, but the brightness buttons never worked… there is no way to map the FN key with the F5 and F6 keys ?

    Thanks again !

Is it possible to lock the keypad when typing. You guys have any programmes or something that could help. I type a lot, and it has become quite irritating since the cursor moves on to the next line. I use an external mouse, and i would like to lock this keypad.

please post a response on this page, since i will check back soon.

    Comment by Gaurav — April 30, 2008 @ 2:09 pm

  130. Hi Gaurav,

Well this is do able. But you need to do some system programming and ideal language for that kind of thing is writing code in assembly or Clanguage.

There is an IVT ( Interrupt Vector Table ) for every soft and some hard interrupts that happen within system boundary. The interrupt number 9 is used for handling any keyborad event. Now every key on the keyboard has special number assigned to it. What you need to do it, is to write a program that should be memory resident like ( Interupt 27 or 37 I suppose ) and you need to redirect every event on interrupt 9 ( keyboard ) and analyse the code of the key. If the key code is one of the numeric pad key, just suppress it and don’t pass on the dafault routine in the OS otherwise let any other keypress go as usual.

This is theory, if you are a programmer, you can do it yourself. Otherwise google for any commercially available software.

    cheers :)

I’ve been kinda searching all over the net to find the wireless card just disappearing on the VGN-NR120E model, and no avail on a solution or even what’s goin on. It seems I’m not the only one with this problem as I see others are posting the same thing here as well. There’s got to be an explanation for this annoying thing happening.

I’ve successfully downgraded from Vista to XP with all the correct drivers and all, runs much better and faster but wireless card disappearing problem still exists. Anyone?

Ever since I bought my laptop i have been having that problem with the wireless where t suddenly disappears and the wireless connection drops off. The only way i have found to fix or at least resolve it temporarily is to turn off the laptop and remove the battery for a few minutes.
I was reading some technical support and I think the only way to permanently fix it is to update the motherboard bios and the install the updated wireless drivers. i wish there was a simpler way, if anyone knows of an easier way please let me know thanks.

  159. There seems to be a Microsoft/Intel conspiracy to remove all traces of XP SATA drivers from the WWW so that we are all forced to use VISTA instead of XP. I have a Sony VGN-NS100 series laptop and then I bought a second 350GB SATA hard drive for it so that I could put a clean install of XP PRO.
But now as we all know Sony/Microsoft/Intel have made that very difficult.
Does anyone out in webland have a copy of these very coveted files? Or where they can be found. All the links listed in this blog have been killed. If these files are simply not available anywhere could someone please confirm that this is true.
The file needed has been listed many times before in previous postings but here it is again…iata76_enu.exe

Of course if anyone has the extracted files that would be even better.
    iaachi.cat
    iaachi.inf
    iastor.cat
    iastor.inf
